Description

Many positive things have been written about Gothenburg local Gustav Horneij’s one-man project, Organic Pulse Ensemble. While he has recently stepped back from music production to focus on the important role of parenting, he has now unearthed two gems from a previously intended session.

One must remember that performing and arranging every instrument alone demands an enormous amount of patience, discipline, and a discerning ear — feeling one’s way through what works, what sounds right, and how the dynamics unfold within the music.

Across these two tracks, it is Horneij’s use of flute truly ices the cake. Starting with “Redemption Arc,” a lovely melody that lingers long after the track ends — like a beautiful summer day simply vibing along. A bumping backbone of rhythm is tingled with exotic percussion, cittra harp and subtle wah-wah textures, but just wait until the acoustic guitar solo enters with an improvisation reminiscent of some long-lost Dorothy Ashby session.

“Telluscentric,” the B-side, leans more into rare-groove territory. Wobbling analogue synths drift over an ascending clavinet/wah-wah lick, over the basis of a head-nodding bassline and ripping percussion/rhythm guitar as the track steadily builds and unfolds, with some great flute and sax work, all played by one man!
